The bombing of Darwin also known as the Battle of Darwin was the first and largest single attack on Australia by a foreign country. Australia had very little forces to defend the aircraft raid.
Significance to Australia:
- On the day 242 Japanese aircraft attacked the ships in Darwin’s harbour
- Over half of Darwin’s population fleed south
- Australia was overwhelmed with Japans forces thus it was a Japanese victory
- 235 Australian people killed
- 300-400 Australian wounded
- 30 Australian aircraft destroyed
- 8 Australian vessels sunk
